Raterman Leads Warrenton Track

Melanie Raterman didn’t set foot on the track during the Wright City Invitational last Thursday. But it’s accurate to say, she ran away from the competition. The Warrenton senior continued to dominate in the throwing events, winning both the shot put and discus. She bested the nearest discus threat by nearly 12 feet, clearing 102 feet, 4 inches. Raterman won the shot put by almost two feet, throwing 31 feet, 6 inches. “We expect her to be in the medals, whether she’s in the gold or not,” said Coach Mike Spoede. “So far she’s taken care of business.” She owned half of her team’s individual first-place finishes, with sophomore Madeline Carlson claiming the other half. Carlson won the mile run with a time of 5:54 and owned the two-mile race in 12:46. “For this early in the season she’s putting an awful lot of miles in,” said Spoede. “Three first-place medals is pretty neat.” Warrenton’s 3200-meter relay team continued its successful climb, edging its nearest opponent by 24 seconds. Helping the Warriors to a first-place finish were senior Melora Broker, junior Jacey Clemens, sophomore Madeline Carlson and freshman Lalita Andrews. “We kind of switched it up with different girls, having Jacey step in,” said Spoede. “We’re still working around injuries and trying to make it competitive for conference and districts.” Clemens took fourth in the open 800-meter race. “She hasn’t had much base coming off injuries from cross country, but she showed fair, and we hope to get her stronger,” said Spoede. Junior Daphne Meine also had a strong showing for the Warriors, finishing second in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. “She’s very consistent in her heights,” said Spoede. “She had a chance to win, and she’s done a great job of getting points for the team this year.”

Warrenton's Jacey Clemens is being asked to compete in several running events this season.
