Randy Kindschuh takes over Warrenton volleyball program

If its new head coach is any indication, a lack of passion won’t seem to be a problem for the Warrenton volleyball program in the near future.

“I got here at 5:30 this morning and was ready to go,” first-year Head Coach Randy Kindschuh said Monday after his team’s first practice.

Kindschuh coached the Warrenton freshman team the last two seasons before taking over for former varsity Head Coach Kristen McDowell, who is now teaching in the Kansas City area.

“I knew Coach McDowell was looking out toward Kansas City because her fiance is out there,” Kindschuh said, “so I wasn’t too surprised.”

Kindschuh is no stranger to a volleyball court.

An avid Nebraska volleyball fan with head coaching stints at schools in Nebraska and Colorado, he was excited to take over a Warrenton program that finished 17-12-2.

The Warriors return nine varsity letter-winners off that team, which should help Kindschuh’s transition to the varsity program.

“We’ve got a really good nucleus of kids on the varsity level,” he said. “We went to a team camp two weeks ago in Ogallala, Neb., and played 51 games in three days. We did pretty well. We took 10th out of 26 teams, and there were some high-quality teams out there.”

The Warriors split with the host school, and Kindschuh said he saw a glimpse of his team’s potential this fall.

“That was the best I’ve seen us play,” he said. “If we play at that level, we’re going to have a pretty successful season. But I told them I don’t have a magic wand, they still have to work hard every day.”

Kindschuh said senior Ashtyn Dixon stood out the most in Nebraska.

“She did a great job in Ogallala,” he said. “She played every game and by the end of the week she could hardly raise her arms, so I called her Wonder Woman. She was a Warrior for sure out there.”

The Warriors begin their season Aug. 22 at Bowling Green and host Montgomery County the following day for their home opener.

Gateway Athletic Conference North play begins Aug. 25 with a home match against St. Charles, and Wright City comes to Warrenton Sept. 11.

“There are things we can always get better at, but I like what we have at the varsity level,” Kindschuh said. “The J.V level has some good kids that we’ll probably pull up to play varsity at some point, and the freshmen are a really talented group, too. So I’m really excited about what we have.”
