An interesting race has already formed for Warren County presiding commissioner as incumbent Arden Engelage and former Southern District Commissioner Randy Lewis filed Tuesday, opening day for candidates to file. Engelage is seeking a second term. Prior to winning the seat, he served as Southern District commissioner for 10 years. Lewis served as commissioner for one term and was unsuccessful in a bid for a second term last August when he lost to Hubie Kluesner. Lewis was appointed as the Southern District commissioner in 2007 by then-Gov. Matt Blunt to fill the remainder of Engelage's term after Engelage won his race for presiding commissioner. Both are Republicans. No Democrats filed for the office Tuesday. The filing deadline is Tuesday, March 30. The primary election will be held Tuesday, Aug. 3. The primary winners from each party then will square off Tuesday, Nov. 2, in the general election. Four candidates for recorder of deeds, a full-time position created when the county commission voted last year to separate the duties of the circuit clerk. Republicans Debbie Engemann and Lynn Bernard and Democrats Michelle Walch and Stuart Schwartz will face one another in the August primary. Engemann has spent the past 11 years working in the recorder's office under current circuit clerk ex officio Jerri Jordan and touts her experience in wanting to run for elected office. She also worked 23 years at Guardian Title before becoming a county employee. Bernard has spent the last 24 years as manager of Video Classics in Warrenton and felt the timing was right to seek the position. Walch said she is running because she enjoys serving the public. She has worked almost 11 years at the North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC) office in Warrenton. Schwartz has worked at Lewis-Bade Inc. for more than 36 years. His political experience includes time on the Warren County R-III School Board and the county's planning and zoning board. Other than Schwartz, the other three candidates are running for public office for the first time. The new recorder will be paid $49,500, a salary set by a salary commission comprised of elected officials from within the county. Having already announced she would seek another term as circuit clerk, Jordan also filed Tuesday. She is running for office for the fourth time after being appointed to the position September 1998. Her first full term started January 1999. Also filing on the opening day were several Republican incumbents, including County Clerk Barb Daly, Treasurer Gene Cornell, Prosecuting Attorney Mike Wright, Associate Circuit Judge Wes Dalton and Collector Linda Stude. Daly is finishing her fourth term and 12th year in office, while Cornell has served as treasurer for four four-year terms. Stude is aiming to be collector for a sixth term and is on her 20th year in office. Wright is finishing his fifth four-year term. Dalton, meanwhile, is wrapping up his second four-year term. Prior to being elected eight years ago, he was appointed to fill a two-year term when Keith Sutherland was elected circuit judge. In other filings the following candidates, all Republicans, filed for committee seats in their various townships: Dan Simpson (Camp Branch), Henry L. Swanson (South Elkhorn), Barbara Swanson (South Elkhorn), Randy Lewis (South Hickory Grove) and Dan Hampson (Warrenton Ward 3).
