Schools in the Wright City R-II District will start as planned, according to district administrators. Wright City East Elementary, a new school in the district, will welcome students Friday, Aug. 14. The other schools - Wright City High, Wright City Middle and Wright City Elementary - will begin classes Monday, Aug. 17. At the school board's meeting last month, the district adopted an alternative calendar and made plans in case the first day of classes needed to be delayed.. The district set a deadline for Friday to announce any changes to this year's school calendar. Installation of floor tiles at Wright City East Elementary would had been the primary delay, according to school officials. "It appeared that construction delays would necessitate a delayed start, but crews worked hard to stay on schedule," said Superintendent Dr. Chris Gaines. The floor tile concern was solved by using a different adhesive, administrators said. "The floor tile manufacturer requires a moisture threshold in order for the warranty to be honored," Gaines said. "We looked at several options for installing the tile and maintaining the warranty." With the floor tiles installed, teachers and administrators are preparing for the school year. At this time, the new school's front office is completely finished. Michele Reigh, the school's principal, and Lynn Whitehead, the school secretary, are working at the facility. By the end of this week, all of the teachers should be able to get their furniture and books organized for the school year, administrators said. "We are excited about the opening of East Elementary School for the 2009-10 school year," Gaines said. "We have a great staff ready to welcome the students and start a memorable learning experience."
