The Warren County R-III School District celebrated the long-standing tradition of Red Ribbon Week this week by having theme days and promoting the mission behind the initiative.Sponsored by the National Family Partnership, Red Ribbon Week has been in existence since 1985 and is focused on promoting drug awareness. The pledge for foundation is to help children grow up safe, healthy and drug-free.One of the most coveted traditions related to the week is the balloon launch, which Warrior Ridge Elementary fourth- and fifth-grade students participated in on Monday afternoon.“The significance of the balloon launch is to kick off Red Ribbon Week and help raise awareness of the dangers of drug use and underage drinking and tobacco use,” said Warrior Ridge Counselor Cresia Stark. Each school has its own specific themes. At Warrior Ridge, students wore ribbons that declared “United We Stand Against Bullying and Drugs.”In recent years, the issue of bullying has emerged and become an integrated part of Red Ribbon Week.Warren County R-III partnered with Phobius Haunted House to host anti-bullying “Don’t Be a Monster” assemblies at each of the elementary schools early in the week.At Daniel Boone Elementary, students also took part in a poster contest.“We want to educate our kids about what choices are good for their health and safety,” said Daniel Boone Elementary Counselor Katie Shaw. “We want to show them the benefits of working together as a team and to say no to negative influences or choices.”Each of the schools participated in a weeklong canned food drive for Agape and Operation Backpack, which partner with the district to provide food and supplies for students in need.Rebecca Boone Elementary also took part in themed days and special events.
