The 2026-27 school year offers a calendar quirk that means things will be a little different than what they have been in past years.
With Labor Day falling on September 7, 2026, by virtue of state law, the school year in the Warren County R-III School District cannot start before August 25, 2026.
As part of the R-III school board’s October meeting, the body unanimously approved the calendar for the next school year.
“By state law, we can only start two weeks before Labor Day,” Kinginsmith said. “Labor Day is (September) 7, so it’s the latest it could be. This pushes our end date to (Thursday) June 3 (2027). Normally, we would end on a Friday. Because the (year starts) so late, we’ve decided not to have a built-in snow date and to just end on that Thursday.”
When it comes to snow days, the district will use the Alternate Method of Instruction (AMI) days for the five instances. After that, any snow days will be made up on the following Mondays.
Some key facts about the approved schedule, which will once again feature a Tuesday-through-Friday school week, include: 147 days of learning (a total of 62,755 minutes) and 13 teacher workdays, with most falling on the first applicable Monday of each month.
High school and middle school parent-teacher conferences will take place on October 5 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., while elementary parent-teacher conferences will take place on October 26 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Key dates throughout the year are October 23, 2026, the end of the first quarter; January 15, 2027, the end of the first semester; and March 19, 2027, the end of the third quarter. The quarters break down as 36 days of instruction for each of the first three quarters and 39 for the fourth quarter.
Also, June 12 will serve as graduation day for the Class of 2027.
“It’s always interesting when we talk about the 2026-27 calendar (this early),” board President Jeff Schneider said.
All district offices will be closed on July 2, Sept 7, Nov 25-27, Dec 24-Jan 1, Jan 18, Feb 15, Mar 26, May 31 and June 17.
