R-III adds position to help oversee facilities on weekends

Record Staff WriterThe Warren County R-III School Board has decided to add a new position to alleviate weekend and overtime duties for current full-time employees. The board approved the move with a 7-0 vote during its monthly meeting Sept. 10, titling the position weekend activity worker or facility director.Superintendent Dr. Jim Chandler says an increase in district extracurricular activities and events warranted the need for additional help.“As we continue to grow and have more events, we are going to need to hire more people to help facilitate those,” said Chandler. “We’ve added five activities in the past three years alone.”The district has taken pride in earning the rights to host several MSHSAA playoff events and regional competitions. Chandler says they will continue to seek the opportunity to facilitate these type of events.“We’re being recognized at the state level for our facilities, and we want to make sure we have the staff and support to continue that,” he said. This new role will help to provide the option for current district employees to opt out of working overtime if the schedule indicates a need, but the employee does not prefer the additional hours.“During the fall especially is a busy time for our schools, and I don’t think most people realize how much time our custodial staff puts in behind the scenes,” said Chandler. “They’re kind of the unsung heroes of the district, and we want to make sure they have the option of not working overtime.”The position summary says the employee would be responsible for creating a clean and safe environment in district buildings. The job duties include the thorough cleaning of school facilities as well as coordinating the setup and breaking down process of special events. The position requires zero to two years of job-related experience and a high school diploma or equivalent.R-III awards snow removal bidDuring the same September meeting, the board also approved the bid for snow removal service, awarding a contract to T.S. Banze Construction Inc., which was the only bid submitted. The service provided by T.S. Banze starts with a base cost of $2,740 for a 1- to 3-inch snowfall to be removed from seven district location parking lots, including the high school, Black Hawk Middle School, Rebecca Boone Elementary, Daniel Boone Elementary, Warrior Ridge Elementary, Early Childhood and Special Education Center and the bus garage parking lot.Costs can reach $6,940 for a 12-inch snowfall and an additional $640 is charged to clear the driving lanes at the locations.Additional options were presented for snow removal from sidewalks, with a base of $2,670 and a deicing service starting at $2,235 for driving lanes and $3,485 for parking lots.Warren Co.
