R-II moving forward with facility upgrades

As part of its five-year facilities plan, the Wright City R-II School District is looking to move forward with upgrades to several facilities. The board approved bids for work on the track and surrounding areas at the high school athletic complex during its monthly meeting Feb. 20. The district is looking to resurface the track.“We took recommendations to resurface and those came in under what we thought they would be, which is nice,” said Superintendent Dr. David Buck. The district also is looking to add handicapped parking and sidewalks around the baseball field to make it more handicapped accessible.“We want to make it a smooth surface where wheelchairs can go across it well and increase access to the bathroom area, which is currently gravel around it,” said Buck.In addition, the district will consider updating the desks at Wright City West Elementary.“Some of them are 28 years old and are falling apart, so we’re going to replace those over the summer,” said Buck. The district also reseals a parking lot every summer, as the buildings go through a rotation.Buck said R-II will look at improving its playground spaces next year.“We will put together committees at East and West elementary to start planning for expansion,” he said. “We’re looking to expand both areas, and we want their feedback on what would be most beneficial to the students.“We have a dollar amount set up for expanding and increasing shade,” he added. “They have both those pieces, and it will be up to them on how to increase expansion. We want to increase opportunities for kids.”Buck said the district believes in relying upon committees to make informed and non-biased decisions by including sources from many backgrounds.“If you have two or three people get behind closed doors and make a decision, they may not see all the angles to consider,” he said. “The more eyes, the better the perspective. We’re the ultimate community group and we serve the community so they should be involved in those types of decisions.”Wright City School District logo
