The Wright City R-II School Board adopted next year's calendar by voting to open the new school Friday, Aug. 14. The students in the district's other three buildings - Wright City Elementary, Wright City Middle School and Wright City High School - will begin Monday, Aug. 17. The new facility, currently under construction off Cotton Road and expected to be completed by August, will house all kindergarten and first-grade students in the district. "It's going to give us a day to get things ironed out and concentrate on the new school and make it a celebration," Superintendent Chris Gaines said. The final day of the first semester for Wright City East Elementary will be Monday, Dec. 21. Other students conclude the semester the following day. While the first and last day of the opening semester will be different for students at Wright City East and the district's remaining buildings, the schedule will be the same for all students regarding early releases and holidays. Following Christmas break from Dec. 22-Jan. 1, all students will begin the second semester on Tuesday, Jan. 5. The last day of school is set for Friday, May 21, 2010. Spring break is scheduled for March 15-19. Graduation, however, has yet to be scheduled, Gaines said. A new feature to next year's school calendar is three built-in snow days in case of inclement weather. By state guidelines, a school calendar must include 174 days, Gaines said. Next year's calendar begins with a 177-day schedule, but could be shortened if snow days don't have to be used. Gaines said he preferred the built-in snow days based on past experiences. "What is does help is protect spring break," he remarked. "It's protection from adding days on at the end." The three built-in snow days are Jan. 18, Feb. 15 and April 5. Additional snow days, if needed, will be tacked onto the end of the school year on May 24 and May 25. Should the district not have to use any of the built-in snow days, the three dates to be removed from the calendar (in order of preference) are May 21, May 7 and May 20.
