R-II considers name for early childhood center

Record Staff WriterWright City R-II officials and are turning to its community advisory task force for input and recommendations on naming the district’s new early childhood education building.R-II Superintendent Dr. Chris Gaines introduced the challenge to the school board at its Jan. 15 meeting.“In order to actually get a building number from DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education), we have to tell them what the name of the building is,” Gaines told the board. He said the district would need to make a decision no later than March. The building is being constructed between the district’s central office and SunRise United Methodist Church on Bell Road. It will house preschool, early childhood special education and Parents as Teachers programs.School board member Laura Marsh suggested naming the building for an individual in the community such as an outstanding educator or one of the city’s long-standing leaders. Board Treasurer Mary Groeper said her fear in naming it after an individual is that the name loses meaning after time as new people come into the community and new generations are not as familiar with the individual.“I’m really not in favor of naming after a person, and there are so many amazing people around that it’s hard to pick one,” Groeper said.Others said they’d be fine with calling it the Wright City Early Childhood Education Center, but wanted to get more input.“I’d like to reach out to the community and get some thoughts from them before making a final decision,” member Heidi Neill said.Vice President Austin Jones said he would like to see the district’s community advisory team consider ideas for recommendations to be acted on at the board’s meeting this month.R-II considers name for early childhood center
