By Janine Davis Record Staff Writer The Wright City R-II School Board took action this month to continue facilities improvements this spring and summer. The improvements are the latest addition to the district’s five-year building and grounds enhancement plan. “Part of our five-year capital plan includes putting in 5-foot-wide sidewalks around the south side of the Athletic Complex to connect people to where they pay to get in instead of walking through the grass,” said R-II Superintendent Dr. Chris Gaines. “We’ll also have some additional concrete pads at each of the track entrances as well as a pad on the back side of the field house.” During its March 18 monthly meeting, the board approved specifications for the project to go to bid. Board Vice President Austin Jones made the motion, which was approved 6-0. Board member Joe Butterfield was absent. With public bid openings planned for April 1, the district anticipates awarding the contract around April 18 with start of construction around July 5. The sidewalks will be ADA compliant, and concrete approaches will allow safe, convenient walkways from visitor to home stands. Facilities Director Jack Sanford said the new broad sidewalks will make it easy for people to walk in groups and will accommodate the band and its equipment. West Elementary HVAC Specs Also Approved Also approved during the March meeting were heating and air conditioning bid specifications for West Elementary. The work — planned for this summer —continues a multiyear plan to replace a total of 18 HVAC units at the school that began last year and that will go through 2017. Middle School Roof The board also approved a $215,050 bid — the lowest of three — from Missouri Builders Service for the replacement of a section of the middle school’s three-part roof. The new roof will be made of a highly durable rubber-like TPO (thermoplastic polyolefin)/ PVC material that school leaders say is most cost effective. “We’ve squirreled away funds to deal with the roof issue, so the money is there (in Fund 4) to fix it,” said Gaines.Gaines added that work on the roof could take place this summer.
