During its monthly board meeting on May 19, the Wright City R-II School District unanimously approved the decision to award extra duty pay to seven different individuals serving six extra-curricular programs.Superintendent David Buck says he decided to gauge the need for compensation for those committing time to responsibilities beyond their job description.“We have a lot of people volunteering their time," said Buck, who received six responses to his staff-wide inquiry. “We want to honor people’s time and give them that option to be paid.”Four of the positions approved for pay are already in existence, while two will be new during the 2016-17 school year. The total anticipated compensation among all seven positions combined is expected to be around that of the stipend provided to Head Football Coach Jeff Sargent, which is $4,089.The school figues the extra-day contract pay by taking a percent of what the Bachelor degree level step salary would be for the number of years of experience in that coaching or sponsorship role. The scale range from .5 to 12 percent.Buck says this is an effective way of keeping the salaries current, as the extra-day amount increases when the staff’s original salary is raised. “This way we don’t get out of date with our raises,” said Buck. “If it doesn't get addressed, then our amounts become outdated and are a lot lower than our neighbors.”Approved to begin receiving extra-duty pay were sponsors of the Saturday Science Club at East Elementary, Wright City West Elementary Yearbook, Earth Club and Students Against Destruction Decisions. The two new programs proposed were a middle school level Math Counts math team and an after-school English writing lab in the library. “This English lab would also allow us to extend the hours for students who would need internet connectivity offered by the school, so they could complete assignments or receive help with research,” said Buck.Wright City R-II School District
