Q&A with WHS's Teacher of the Month: Mike Shaw

Mike Shaw is Warrenton High School’s Teacher of the Month.Shaw, a science teacher, has been teaching for 18 years, all of them in Warrenton. His students are in ninth to 12th grade physics and astronomy classes, which include elements of math and engineering. For the past 14 years, he’s also been the assistant coach for cross country.Do you have a family? My wife Katie works at Daniel Boone Elementary as a counselor. I have two daughters Audrey (eighth grade) and Avery (fourth grade) and my happy, old dog Dagny. What fuels your passion?Seeing the growth of students’ knowledge and maturity from the beginning of the year to the end of the year and from freshman year to senior year. The biggest boost in fueling my passion for teaching is when former students (now college students) contact/visit me and tell me that my teaching style and classes have prepared them more for college than any other class they have taken in high school. When I hear such comments, I know that I am doing something right and it drives me to continue challenging my students. What do you like to do away from school?Besides spending time with my family and friends, outside of school I enjoy photography, astronomy, nature, and baseball. (GO CUBS!).Do you have an interesting story about you?My father is a veteran of the United States Air Force. After I was born in Chicago (GO CUBS!), I was lucky enough, as a child, to live in several different locations in the world. I have lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, spent three years in England, one year in Italy, then moved back to the states (Illinois), before coming to Warrenton.
