Putting on a show: Warren County’s young artists set to be on display

To say Harlee Best has suffered for her craft would be pretty accurate.

A sophomore at Wright City, Best recently showed off her work as part of the Wright City High School Art Club’s participation in the Warren County Art Exhibit for local students. She was at the February R-II School Board meeting as part of the preview of the upcoming show, and said that her displayed piece was a challenging effort.

“It took a couple of weeks, it was difficult,” said. “The thread wouldn’t stop modding up.”

Best’s work, which is an embroidered fiber project, along with students from Wright City High School in the R-II District and Black Hawk Middle and Warrenton High School in the R-III district, will be on display from March 10-19 at the Warren County Museum, located at 102 West Walton Street, as part of a Warren County Historical Society exhibit.

The art show will feature more Fiber projects like Best’s, as well as some felting and weaving. There will also be paintings, drawings, sculptures, collages and ceramics.

Best is one of a group of students who, under the direction of club moderator and Wright City High School Art Teacher Jennifer Chizmar, meet every Tuesday after school to work on creations.

Wright City High School Principal Dr. Jason Theodorakos lauded the group for its dedication to the arts.

“They are very active,” Theodorakos said. “They have 15-20 kids. Art Club is really popular and the kids are just so talented.”

Chizmer said that the club is an extension of the school’s art classes.

Students meet after school and work more in depth on projects they wouldn’t otherwise have the chance to do.

“(Art Club) gives us the opportunity to do things we wouldn’t do in class, like stained glass,” Chizmer said. “Right now, they’re preparing stuff for the art show, so that’s really exciting.”

Theodorakos added that examples of the club's work are currently on display in the exhibition space at Wright City High School.

“In by our café, we have a rotating display and Art Club is in there right now,” Theodorakos said. “They created these guitars that were really cool, and we were hoping they’d bring them, but they’re really fragile. We’re trying to showcase art this month and show kids how that can be a pathway for kids in careers and in life.”

A special event for the exhibition is April 23 from 5-7 p.m. with an awards presentation at 6 p.m. Artists in sixth through 12th grade will be featured.
