Pumpkin Drop to cap 10th annual Harvest Picnic on Sept. 20

The Immaculate Conception Parish will celebrate its 10th annual Harvest Picnic Sunday, Sept. 20, with a full day of food, games, auctions and family activities at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Montgomery City.

The picnic will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with most activities taking place in the Merchants’ Building and 4-H Building. The change in location is necessary because the fairgrounds’ food stand was demolished to make way for a new facility planned for next year’s Montgomery County Fair.

Food will be served throughout the event, including Immaculate Conception’s famous kettle beef and pork steak dinners. The dinners include mashed potatoes, green beans, corn and a roll, with carry-outs available. Sandwiches and snacks also will include pork burgers, hot dogs, pork steak, French fries, nachos, desserts, cotton candy and kettle corn. Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., while sandwiches and snacks will be available from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The day will offer activities for all ages, including a country store, bake sale, quilt raffle, $500 cash raffle, vendors, water games, barrel train rides, kids’ games and bounce houses. The kids’ activities are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Several auctions also are planned. A silent auction will begin at 11 a.m., followed by the live auction at 12:30 p.m. and a paddle auction at approximately 2 p.m. A donut-eating contest is scheduled for approximately 2:45 p.m.

The festivities will conclude with what promises to be one of the picnic’s most entertaining spectacles — the Great Pumpkin Drop.

Last year marked the first pumpkin drop, featuring a pumpkin weighing more than 100 pounds. The pumpkin was raised into the air with a lift before being dropped into a small swimming pool filled with numbered balls.

When the pumpkin hit the water, the resulting splash sent the balls flying in every direction. The ball that traveled the farthest won the prize money.

The Pumpkin Drop is scheduled for approximately 3 p.m., providing a splashy finale to the day’s festivities.

Organizers invite everyone to attend and spend the day visiting with friends and family. Immaculate Conception Parish is sponsoring the event, which also celebrates Montgomery City’s 165th year.
