A 5K run with a chance to earn “bonus time” is coming to Wright City Saturday, June 10.The Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce and Snap Fitness are hosting the event, which includes a high school art contest and a fundraising effort for the city. The event, called the Chamber Pump and Run 5K, is the first of its kind in the city, and likely the county, said David Buck, event coordinator and superintendent of the Wright City School District. The unique aspect is that participants can weight lift, or “pump,” to shave time off their run.“It attracts runners and lifters,” Buck said. The Chamber Pump and Run 5K registration and race is Saturday, June 10, at SNAP Fitness, 10 Wildcat Drive in Wright City. The pump portion is from 7:45-8:45 a.m.During that time, participants weigh in. Males bench 90 percent of their body weight. Females bench 50 percent. For every rep they complete, they get to take 15 seconds off their 5K time. The run starts are 9 a.m. Buck said the running course is flat and fast. The fee is $15 for adults during May for early registration, and $20 during June for late registration. Participants will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last. Top runners and pumpers in their class can earn awards.Proceeds from the event will go toward sprucing up the former “Welcome to Wright City” billboard at Westwood and North Service road. The billboard is privately owned and the Wright City Area Chamber of Commerce adopted it to maintain and put up a welcome sign years ago.“I’ve been here nine years and (the billboard) predates me. Over time it started to fade and peel down,” said Buck. “We’re going to repair it and replace it.”Students at Wright City High School were invited to enter a cash prize contest to create a new design for the billboard. The winner will be announced at an upcoming Chamber meeting.Applications for early registration are available on fliers at local businesses, schools, the Chamber and Snap Fitness. “I think it will be a fun event,” said Buck. “It’s an interesting event, for a good cause to beautify Wright City.”Marathon
