Warren County properties that are two years delinquent in property taxes will be subject to having their land listed in the back tax sale this year.Warren County Collector Julie Schaumberg recently made a change reducing the number of delinquent years from three to two.Previously, properties that were eligible to be sold at the tax sale had to be three years in arrears. The change was made to reduce the number of delinquent accounts and get property owners to pay their delinquent taxes in a timelier fashion.“Compared to counties around us, we have too many that are on there,” Schaumberg told The Record. “That is money not being collected for our county and taxing districts.”The tax sale consists of auctioning off properties to the highest bidder and is always held the fourth Monday of August each year, a schedule that is set by state statute. This year’s initial list of properties eligible for the tax sale totals 782. Of that figure, taxes have not been paid for 427 properties in 2014 and 2015, while 355 are in arrears for three or more years, according to the collector’s office.Earlier this month, the collector mailed notices to property owners who will be affected by the change.Taxpayers can avoid having their property advertised for sale at the tax sale by paying their 2014 bill and any prior years still owed by May 1. Failure to meet that deadline will require property owners to also pay their 2015 taxes and any advertising costs incurred by the county to remove their parcel from the tax sale by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19. The tax sale list is published for three consecutive weeks in The Record leading up to the sale. The change from three to two years has been mixed. Schaumberg said dozens of accounts have been brought current already, but others are frustrated that their properties are now eligible for the sale.“We have so many habitual,” Schaumberg said. “Every year, they pay one year just to get it off the tax sale.”Payments can be made with cash, cashier’s check or money order.
