Prop J is a path to independence

To The Editor:Turning Point Advocacy Services offers safe shelter and supportive services for victims of domestic and sexual abuse and violence.Every survivor’s story is unique, but every one of them has this in common: the need for financial security in order to build a safer life after leaving abusive circumstances. At Turning Point, clients get counseling on money management and other key life skills. Those who lack a high school diploma have access to resources to achieve equivalency. If they are unemployed, there is coaching for interview skills and job searches.Too often, the jobs they are qualified to do pay minimum wage. Many Turning Point clients have dependents. It isn’t possible to build financial security earning minimum wages. Working multiple jobs when you are recovering from trauma and taking care of children is a recipe for failure. The certification programs available through a Technical Training Institute in Warrenton would offer opportunity for our clients. Gaining the skills that would qualify them for well-paying jobs could change the trajectory of their lives. Confidence and healthy self-esteem are tremendous benefits of having certified skills. Being able to acquire this training locally would make all the difference. As the governing body of Turning Point, we support Prop J on Warren County’s April ballot. Our clients have lots of potential. Prop J will bring opportunity closer to them.Board Chair Laura Adams and the Board of Directors,Turning Point Advocacy Services
