Prom dream comes true for Warrenton High School senior

By Tim SchmidtRecord Managing EditorFrom picking out the perfect dress to finding the perfect hair-style, prom is a high school tradition girls spend months — if not years — dreaming about.This year, it was Jessica Jansen’s turn to experience the fairytale evening. All because of the thoughtfulness of two close friends who invited Jansen, a Warrenton High School senior with Down syndrome.“Jessica is my best friend and I couldn’t imagine that night without her,” said senior Ivy Tinnin. “I know she deserved something special like that.”In the weeks leading up to this year’s prom, held April 25 in St. Charles, Tinnin and her boyfriend, junior Dillen Mayfield, decided to ask Jansen to go to prom with them. As part of their prom-posal, the couple took a picture of them with Jansen and cut it into puzzle pieces. They had other students and teachers giving the puzzle pieces one by one to Jansen.Tinnin and Mayfield then surprised Jansen in the school office with flowers and the missing piece to complete the picture.“We wanted to ask her in a special way because it’s her senior prom also,” Tinnin said.Mayfield added, “I think everyone should experience that one night at prom. Without us, she probably would not have gone.”The gesture caught Jansen off guard.“I didn’t know what was going to happen,” she said. “I was real surprised.”The day of prom was busy for Jansen. She competed in a Special Olympics track meet earlier in the day, but a quick nap on the way to the dance helped re-energize her.“I had to get my groove on,” Jansen quipped. She said she enjoyed dancing with her friends the most. All in all, it was a night to remember.“It was fun,” Jansen said.
