Postal service offers end to mailbox dispute

The end is in sight for Truesdale residents in a dispute with the U.S. Postal Service. In a letter addressed to Alderman Mike Thomas, the postal service has offered to begin delivering mail to groups of mailboxes throughout the Heritage Hills subdivision. This is a reversal of what residents were told last year, which is that all mail would be delivered to one central cluster box unit at the entrance to the subdivision.“Everyone I talked to was ecstatic,” said Thomas, who is a resident of the Heritage Hills subdivision.Currently, mail is delivered to a line of mailboxes at the subdivision entrance. Homeowners were upset by the idea of centralized mail delivery because they said they were promised eventual curbside delivery at every home.Thomas has been representing his neighbors in months of negotiations with the postal service. He also had appealed for help from the offices of several state and national elected representatives. The letter sent to Thomas Jan. 9 offered a compromise that is close to what residents were asking for.Curbside delivery in Heritage Hills will require “boxes to be grouped to serve a minimum of two addresses (boxes) mounted to a single base structure,” said Charles Mandina, a USPS operations programs support manager, in the letter. “Closer density between driveways, such as within cul-de-sacs and other tight maneuvering areas, requires three or more boxes mounted from a single base.”Expenses for the installation and maintenance of the shared mailbox posts will be the responsibility of the residents.Mandina said the postal service will begin delivering curbside as long as all the box locations are finalized and installed at the same time.

A line of mailboxes at the entrance of the Heritage Hills subdivision in Truesdale serves almost 50 homes. The entrance road is accessed from Veterans Memorial Parkway. The U.S. Postal Service recently agreed to a compromise to move the mailboxes.
