Sitze allowed just one run in seven innings and Post 122 received a number of contributions at the plate in an easy 11-1 victory in eight innings. The win improved Warrenton's overall record to 9-9. Saturday was just the second start of the season for Sitze and only his fifth appearance toeing the rubber this summer for Post 122. Most of his playing time has been at shortstop and elsewhere when needed. He relished the opportunity to stare down opposing batters. "It's different, I like pitching," said Sitze, who will be entering his senior year at Wright City. "It's one of my favorite things to do. But it's wherever the team needs me so I go there." Following his performance against North, Sitze has allowed just eight runs, five earned, in 22 innings this summer. The right-hander's earned run average dropped from 2.15 to 2.05. His final line included eight strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter. He gave up four hits, including a two-out line drive that led to the Knights' only run in the top of the fourth. He struck out four of the final five batters he faced until giving way to reliever Nathan Eaklor. "I felt pretty good out there," Sitze said. "At first, I was throwing a little high. I realized I wasn't striding out as far as I need to. I fixed that and let the defense take over." Manager Jerry Carlyle wasn't surprised to see Sitze show no rust. "He's going to get the job done," Carlyle said. "We knew we played these guys again (Sunday) and we wanted to give some guys some innings that hadn't had as much with the (Elsberry) tournament coming up." The Knights, still in search of their first win of the summer, were eager to snap their winless skid when they closed within 3-1. However, Post 122 poured it on from there. Warrenton extended its lead to 6-1 in the bottom half of the fourth all with two outs. Sitze led off with an infield single and later scored on a pass ball. Mike Govednik singled in Adam Ragsdale with two outs and then Darren Carlyle scored when the center fielder's throw went to the backstop. A couple of miscues by North in the seventh led to three more runs, including Matt Duren sprinting home on a double steal. A sacrifice fly by Sitze brought in Adam Nickelson, while Greg Schuknecht later had a RBI single. The game closed in the bottom of the eighth as Govednik walked and scored on a double by Duren. Patrick McGuire then brought Duren home on a sac fly to center to provide the final margin. "When you're playing a team that hasn't won a game, you have to watch them," Jerry Carlyle said. "They're just waiting. If you don't take them serious, and stay on top of them and keep them down, it's easy to get beat in that situation." Eight starters had at least one hit for Post 122. The only batter to not record a hit, Darren Carlyle, did score twice. Eric Burton, Govednik and Duren all had two hits in the win. Govednik joined Carlyle with two runs scored. "One of our biggest things is hitting," Sitze said. "Our team is really good at hitting. Everybody hits. Everything is going good for us this year." The pitcher who relieved Sitze in the eighth was also making a long awaited return to the mound. Eaklor, making his first appearance since the season opener when he suffered an arm injury, retired all three batters he faced in the eighth. The lefty struck out one. Warrenton plays in a tournament hosted by Elsberry this weekend. Post 122 is back home Tuesday versus Union. Game time is 6 p.m.
