A week earlier the Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion team had drilled Sullivan with runs, scoring 13 through four innings. But then entered Trey Fink. For the remainder of the game, Post 122 couldn’t muster a single hit, let alone another run. And Fink didn’t give up any walks either. So when the teams met again on Friday, Warrenton Coach Kevin Shough knew who would be on the mound.“I told them we would see him tonight,” quipped Shough. “I guaranteed it.”And the results were no different. Except this time, Sullivan would prevail 1-0.Fink struck out 14 Post 122 batters, who became increasingly frustrated with each trip to the plate.“That kid had our number,” said Shough. “He earned that win. We needed to adjust quicker, and we should have.”But it never happened, and Warrenton managed just two hits the entire game. Shough says his players were too consumed with disagreeing with the umpire’s strike zone instead of trying to be aggressive.“Our biggest problem was we were fussing about the curve ball being called a strike,” said Shough. “Our guys didn’t think it was, but when the empire does, you’ve got to do something with it.”Post 122’s best chance to score came when speedster Dallas Deroy got on base on two occasions. He walked during the third inning, advancing to third base before consecutive strikeouts ended the inning.“Lack of offense was what hurt us today,” said Shough. “Then we had to resort to bunting.”It was how Deroy ended up on the base paths again in the eighth. He again stole his way to third, before a strikeout ended the inning. The only other time Warrenton reached base was on a single by Kenny Dildine to lead off the seventh. All the while, Post 122 starter Taylor Duvel was doing his part to keep Sullivan off balance. He struck out nine and did not allow a single walk through seven innings of work.“Taylor did an outstanding job, and even when guys got on our defense stepped up and made the plays,” said Shough.Sullivan connected on one of its four hits during the eighth inning, but it was an error that allowed the runner to advance home. Warrenton then went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the ninth, just as it had done in five other innings.Hunter Capstick came in to pitch the final inning, striking out two.SENIORS FALL TO SULLIVANDerrick Forsythe photo.
