Post 122 Seniors Fall to St. Peters

The first victory of the season was on the table for the Warrenton Post 122 Legion seniors. Leading a tight defensive game 1-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Coach Chad Berrey decided it was time for a pitching change. Jakob Junker had exhausted himself through eight innings, pushing his pitch count to an uncomfortable level. “When he came out he was in the mid-90s, and that’s too much to ask for one player to go out and do,” said Berrey. “Junker threw lights out and impressed us. He’s probably considered our ace.” Berrey brought in Paul Inman as the closer, not wanting to over-exert his starter. With a thin cushion with which to work, Inman needed to attack the strike zone right away to prevent St. Peters from any type of rally. “Paul has shown us he can close out games, so we’re going to continue to put him in during the last few innings until he consistently blows games, but I don’t see that happening,” said Berrey. Unfortunately, he couldn’t avoid it on Monday. St. Peters opened the inning with a hit, but used four walks to push through the game-winning run. “We can’t put that much pressure on our closer every time he goes out,” said Berrey. Warrenton collected its lone run in the sixth inning when Garrett Capstick advanced home, after Trevor Bradshaw, Kenny Dildine and Junker unleashed consecutive singles. "Our young guys are starting to hit, and we got runners on base,” said Berrey. “We got a hit through.” Junker attempted to score but was ruled out at home plate. “We thought we could Junker in there after the ball was thrown away,” said Berrey. Warrenton played one of its tightest defensive games, but Berrey says it’s going to take more than one run to win most games. For Post 122, who left nine runners on base, it was about what could have been. “We stranded too many runners on base,” lamented Berrey. “If they throw a pitcher we can hit, we better jump on them early.”
