That was sort of Coach Kevin Shough’s mantra as he lamented over his team’s 9-7 loss to Pacific on Monday.Despite its woes, the Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion team still found itself in position to win during the bottom of the seventh inning.Shough believes that rally was simply a product of urgency — exhibited far too late.“We started hitting the ball on the nose in the last inning,” said Shough. “(With the game nearing an end) they knew they had to focus more, so they concentrated more on the ball.”But Pacific had built a strong enough lead early and sustained defensively throughout the game. Post 320 pushed its first three batters across the plate and added a fourth run later in the first inning.“We started out letting guys on base that we shouldn’t have,” said Shough. “We were making mistakes throwing the ball around.”Matters were quickly complicated for starting pitcher Brandon Moeller, who had shaky support behind him.“We weren’t making our plays in the field like we should’ve been,” said Shough. “There’s certain plays these guys are capable of making, and they’re not getting it done right now.”Pacific tacked on another run in the second inning and led 5-0 before Post 122 ever crossed the plate. Finally in the third inning Hunter Capstick provided some life for Warrenton with two outs, punching a two RBI home run over the left field to score Corey Eckenfels, who had singled, as well. Moeller added another hit before the inning closed.“At the plate, I think we took a step backwards with where we were in the last game,” said Shough. “We’ve got to get our bats working and clean up what we’re doing in the field.”Post 122 placed three runners on during the next two innings, including on a double by Airk Rader. But each ended up as part of Warrenton’s 12 stranded runners. Not until it trailed 9-4 in the bottom of the seventh, did Warrenton begin to rally back into contention.“Those are the kind of things that we can control, and we’re not,” said Shough.Moeller was hit by a pitch and Donovan Mozee followed with a double. Rader scored the third run on a single by Troy Muse. But a close defeat was little consolation for Shough.“We’re still a little noncohesive with some of these guys not having played ball together yet, but that’s not an excuse,” said Shough. “We’ve got to get it together.SENIORS FALL TO PACIFICDerrick Forsythe Photo.
