After being involved in a Post 122 Legion baseball organization that struggled to maintain numbers, Coach Kevin Shough is thrilled to see a revival.“With having three teams, it’s like a feeder group for each level,” said Shough. “When you have that one team, you’ve got nobody to look to for help.”Limited to just one team over the past few seasons, the presence of three separate teams is a breath of fresh air.“It’s a great feeling for several reasons,” said Shough. “It helps the two high schools with kids getting some higher level ball in the offseason. While the younger teams will field mostly first-time players, Shough has the privilege of working with a stable of Legion veterans. It begins with an experienced pitching crew. The Post 122 seniors boast depth and will be headlined by Brandon Moeller, Paul Inman and Kenny Dildine, who bring considerable innings. Each is expected to pitch, along with Airk Rader, Taylor Duvel and newcomer Donovan Mozee.“Right now I’m comfortable with the fact we have several pitchers that are going to throw strikes. And when the ball is put into play, we should be able to field it.”With the schedule already under way, Shough has gained a look at most of his players, although not all have been present for game action. At first base he is expecting to utilize Corey Eckenfels, Dildine and Mozee, with Dildine intended as a utility player.Tyler Brittain and Luke Darity will split time at second base, while Moeller and Dildine handle responsibilities at shortstop. At third base, Duvel and Mozee each bring experience from high school ball at that position.Post 122 offers plenty of versatility in the outfield.Jacob Abel, Trevor Reese and Dildine will play leftfield, while Hunter Russell and Troy Muse handle center field. In right field, Shough expects Hunter Capstick and Dallas Deroy to be reliable resources.Behind the plate, he is looking to Rader, Inman and Abel to be a wall.“Defensively, we’ve looked really good,” said Shough. “If that stays with us, our pitchers can keep us in the games.”In terms of batting order, Russell will lead off, with Capstick likely taking the second spot. Moeller and Mozee will then step in with power in the third and fourth roles. The seniors currently have 18 games scheduled, but Shough says he is determined to add to that slate in the near future.“I’d like to be closer to 25 or 30, so we’re hoping to pick up some games,” said Shough. “We’ve got some open dates throughout the season.”This year’s team showcases a group balanced between Warrenton and Wright City.INMAN THROWSJason Peake photo.
