Many of the same challenges that plagued the Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion team all season were present again on Tuesday.Post 122 concluded the season with a 6-2 loss to West, a defeat that was much worse in the beginning than the final score indicates. It brought Warrenton’s season to an end with a 1-15 record, Post 122 not having won a game since June 13 against Sullivan.“Our biggest problem this season was leaving runners on base,” said Coach Kevin Shough. “Again tonight we get runners on, but we can’t move them around.”Still, Warrenton started out hot at the plate, collecting three hits and scoring a run in the top of the first. Hunter Capstick and Brandon Moeller opened with singles, and Kenny Dildine followed to drive in Capstick. But Post 122 would leave five runners on base during the first three innings, as West was far more efficient on the base paths.“I had a hit-and-run in play, and the runner didn’t go,” said Shough. “And those kind of things hurt.”Four consecutive hits, including a double, helped West out to a 2-1 leader after one inning. It added three more runs in the second, finding the gaps frequently but also taking advantage of egregous errors on Warrenton’s part.“We struggled early and made some mistakes, which gave up a lot of extra runs that shouldn’t have gotten in there,” said Shough. “It made the game a whole different scenario.”Balls glanced off Post 122 player’s gloves and were bobbled on other occasions, extending the innings for West’s batters. A quick 5-1 deficit had Warrenton hanging its head early, but they would regain life as Moeller gradually took control on the mound.“It could have been a lot worse,” said Shough. “Brandon got tough and started throwing more strikes, and the guys made some plays behind him finally.”West went scoreless the next five innings, but Moeller had exhausted his pitch count in the early going, reaching 140 pitches. He exited after seven, getting relief from Donovan Mozee. But once again, Shough found himself facing a dilemma when making a pitching change, having only 10 players rostered.“I’m trying to figure out who to get loose and how to get them loose,” said Shough. “Just for one pitching change, four guys had to change positions.”Warrenton’s only other run came in the fifth, with Capstick again scoring, this time off a single by Moeller. Capstick had doubled, and ended up 4-for-4 with three singles and a double.Post 122 finished with eight team hits. It stranded a total of 11 runners on base.“The boys approaches at the plate got better than when we started out,” said Shough. “Their hustles to fly balls got better. In the beginning of the season I didn’t think we were making the effort to get to them.”SEASON FINALEDerrick Forsythe photo.
