With the wealth of talent and experience he’s bringing together to form this summer’s Warrenton Post 122 Senior Legion team, first-year coach Scott Butler has considerable expectations. The program has seen an increase in the number of Wright City players joining a cast also hailing from Warrenton and Wentzville.“As long as we stay level-headed, we should be right where we want at the end of the year,” said Butler. “There are a lot of pieces and hopefully we put them in the right place. The team is very diverse and has a lot of arms.”Post 122 will be particularly strong on the mound, with the merging of top pitchers from both past and present.Ben Stephens comes to the Legion program after playing select baseball during previous seasons. His ability, combined with that of former Warrenton High School pitcher Brandon Moeller, should provide a formidable combination.“Any time you have Ben throwing, you’ve got a good chance of winning,” said Butler. And getting Moeller back for one more year is also a huge help.”Donovan Mozee will likely be the consistent option for closer.“Any situation where Donovan is fresh, he’s going to get the ball in the ninth,” said Butler. “He’s a reliable shutdown closer.”But the prowess at the plate may be just as lethal for a team that boasts both speedsters and power hitters.Troy Muse will lead off, with Stephens following as a left-handed batter in the No. 2 spot.“Troy takes a lot of walks and smart at-bats to get on base and can steal his way around,” said Butler.Mozee, who has a knack for collecting extra-base hits, will likely be a lock in the No. 4 position.Butler says the batting order won’t see much drop-off, with the quick feet of Tyler Brittain providing another “lead-off” type at the bottom of the order.“The lineup, from one through nine, is pretty loaded,” said Butler.Behind the plate, Post 122 is counting on James Dotson, a product of Wentzville Liberty High School.“Dotson is a bonafide premium backstopper,” said Butler.Taylor Duvel and Corey Eckenfels will handle responsibilities at first base, while Chris Garrett and Airk Rader split duties at second base. The duo of Stephens and Moeller will shore up the shortstop role.“That is probably the best shortstop combination in the league,” said Butler.Duvel will also play at third base as needed.Butler is particularly excited about the outfield trio of Muse, Brittain and Hunter Russell, who will be cleared to play on June 10.“You could easily say this is one of the best outfields around,” said Butler. “With everyone back, this is probably the fastest outfield in the district.”As strong as Post 122 may be in the pitching department or with its deep cast of solid hitters, there is one trait that perhaps overshadows both of those.“I think leadership may be our strongest trait,” said Butler. “We’ve got an incredible amount of leadership.”SENIORS BOAST STRONG LEADERSHIPDerrick Forsythe photo.
