Last season inconsistencies at the plate limited the win total for the Warrenton Post 122 Junior Legion team.Coach Ken Dildine hopes that offensive element will catch up with what proves to be a solid defense among the program this summer.“I’d say right now our strongest thing is our defense,” said Dildine. “We’re gelling together. The boys are communicating well and are moving.”The Junior team will have many players double-rostered, splitting time with the senior program, but Dildine doesn’t believe his depth will take a hit.“Right now I’d say we’re way ahead of where we were last year,” said Dildine. He is particularly confident in his pitching staff, which will be headlined by Chris Garrett and Dalton Owenby. Devon Oden, Clayton Schowe and Charlie Gerrard will provide alternatives on the mound.Responsibilities at first base will be handled by Chris Vogt and Will Robinson, while Matt Dildine and Brendan Hazel will play second base.“Brendan will be our utility guy this year, playing a lot of different roles,” said Dildine.Hazel may also play shortstop, along with Oden.Kory Schniedermeyer will play third base, with Owenby falling into other infield roles.“The outfield will be pretty solid,” said Dildine, speaking of Clayton Schowe, Matt Dildine and Girard. He will also have the option of Logan Schneider and Brandon Longacre at those positions. One area of uncertainty for the juniors is behind the plate, where they will replace their catcher from last season. Chris Vogt is expected to fill that role. Dildine is hopeful Braden Lawson may also provide support at that position as a double-rostered option. In terms of its hitting, Post 122 is hoping to make significant improvements from last summer.“In the past our offense has hurt us, but the boys are putting the bat on the ball well this season,” said Dildine. “The boys are hungry and they want to work.”Matt Dildine will lead off the top of the batting order, with Hazel and Oden following. Vogt will bat fourth, hoping to put his power to use when driving in runners.“We’re looking pretty strong this year and expecting to have a pretty good season,” said Dildine. “I’m really looking forward to bringing this program to where it should be.”JUNIORS LEAN ON STRONG DEFENSEDerrick Forsythe photo.
