Methodically, inning by inning, St. Charles separated itself from the Post 122 Junior Legion team on Monday.Warrenton’s hopes of a postseason run were dimmed by a 7-2 loss that dropped Post 122 to 3-14 on the season.“Mathematically, we’re still in position to make it into districts,” said Coach Ken Dildine. “But we’ve really got to turn things around.”St. Charles opened up a 1-0 advantage off a triple in the top of the first. It was the beginning of a batting showcase that produced 11 hits.“They were hitting the ball really well,” said Dildine. “They hit quite a few shots into the gap.”Post 122 countered in the bottom of the inning, as the first three batters walked to load the bases. Chris Garrett then singled to score Dalton Owenby, but Warrenton then recorded two straight outs to end the inning.St. Charles jumped ahead 2-1 in the second, but Post 122 provided an answer in the third. Garrett came through again, doubling to score Brandon Purkaple, who had singled.“Chris is a solid ballplayer,” said Dildine. “He’s seeing the ball really well and making his adjustments. He’s really driving the ball hard right now.”After a scoreless fourth, it was all St. Charles. Two hits, a walk and an error helped pushed through another pair of runs for Post 312.James Dotson started on the mound for Warrenton and couldn’t contain the barrage. He struck out five batters and walked one, while allowing eight hits and two earned runs.“James pitched a heck of a game, but they had his number,” said Dildine. “His pitch count got high, so I switched pitchers.”Warrenton reached base just one more time, on a walk, during the final four innings.“We couldn’t hit the curve ball, but his cure ball wasn’t that great,” said Dildine. “We were trying to get our guys to hit to the opposite side of the field.”Meanwhile, St. Charles separated itself in the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits.Garrett finished with two hits and two RBIs.Dotson and Purkaple each had a hit, with Purkaple adding an RBI and a run scored.“Brandon had another great game,” said Dildine. He also spoke highly of the fielding effort by Devon Oden, a player Post 122 acquired from Montgomery County. He has been a reliable wall at shortstop.“We told the boys last night that we’ve taken them as far as we can,” said Dildine. “Is it still a learning process for these guys.”Warrenton will need to break into the Top 8 in order to qualify for districts. They currently sit one spot out.
