Continuing his dominant season on the mound, Dalton Owenby helped the Warrenton Post 122 Freshman Legion team to an 8-0 victory over West on Sunday. It meant a sweep in the series, with Warrenton having beaten West 11-3 in a previous meeting.“Dalton pitched a heck of a game,” said Coach Brian Vogt. “He was very efficient, throwing a lot of strikes, and they were taking the pitches. They weren’t swinging.”Owenby tossed a full seven innings, striking out five and allowing seven hits. Perhaps his most impressive figure this season is having walked just two batters through 22 innings.“He kept it down in the zone, which helped,” said Vogt. While Owenby was in control, West’s pitching duo couldn’t keep Post 122’s batters off the base paths.“We were able to hit their pitcher and capitalize on their mistakes again,” said Vogt.Warrenton opened up in the second inning when Alex Vogt and Chris Garrett each singled with two outs. James Dotson then walked to load the bases.Owenby then singled, subsequently scoring Vogt and Garrett to give Post 122 a 2-0 edge.Dotson reached home in the third off a hit by Jordan Merrill, and Warrenton continued to cruise in the fifth, tacking on two more runs.Brendan Hazel scored on a single by Dotson and Garrett reached home on an error.“We were putting a lot of pressure on them,” said Vogt. “They weren’t doing a very good job of holding our runners on base. We had the right guys on to steal.”With Hazel and McGee keeping the base paths hot in the lead-off spots, steals were prevelant. McGee scored on an error in the sixth, and Post 122 would add another pair of runs before the inning concluded.Vogt says he is thankful to have several contributors, including Dotson, Garrett and Owenby, who are also competing at the AA level.“It’s kind of a numbers game with these double-rostered guys,” said Vogt.Despite the success on Sunday, wins have been relatively evasive for Warrenton during a 4-11 season. Post 122 will be scrambling to make up a handful of games before the regular season concludes.“Hopefully the rain holds off, so we can get the games in and make the playoffs,” added Vogt.HAZEL SLIDES INTO HOMEDerrick Forsythe photo.
