The Warrenton Post 122 Freshman Legion team came charging back but couldn’t close the deal during a 4-3 loss at New Haven on Friday.Trailing 3-1 for four innings, Warrenton awakened a stagnant offense and pulled out enough seventh-inning magic to drive home two runs.Enjoying success early, it appeared Post 122 had overcome its strikeout woes, which were a concern during the first few weeks of the season.Coach Brian Vogt saw an improvement in his team’s assertiveness in the batters box.“We didn’t have as many strikeouts, and we put the ball in play,” said Vogt. “A couple times we came up with runners in scoring position and even had the ball in play but didn’t get the solid hit to bring runners around.”Brendan Hazel opened the game with a lead-off single and eventually scored off a sacrifice by James Dotson to give Post 122 a 1-0 lead.“Hazel has been on fire in our lead-off spot,” said Vogt. “And Dotson is putting the ball in play really well.”But New Haven responded immediately, pushing across a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning.Reaching base by walk, New Haven was able to steal its way around and score on an overthrown attempt for a pick-off at third base. New Haven then moved ahead 2-1 on a sacrifice fly.A wild pitch in the third inning allowed New Haven a 3-1 lead.It was one of the few hiccups for Clayton Schowe, who started on the mound.“I was very pleased with his performance,” asserted Vogt, who brought in Chris Garrett for relief during the fourth inning.Warrenton closed out the inning with a double play that impressed its coach.“We turned a great double play there,” said Vogt.Keeping New Haven within reach, Post 122 finally found the fire at the plate it needed in the seventh. Hazel led off with a walk and scored on an error with Dotson at bat. He then reached home on a subsequent error which placed Garrett on base.“We definitely had opportunities to blow it wide open, so that’s an improvement,” said Vogt. “To come back on the road and tie the game to go into extras is always a positive.”A lead-off double put New Haven in position for the winning run in the bottom of the eighth, and a ground ball to centerfield with one out was the deciding factor.“We make it too easy for the other team when we don’t put the ball in play,” said Vogt.FRESHMAN FALL AT NEW HAVENDerrick Forsythe Photo.
