Ben Inman could not have picked a more appropriate time to collect his first two hits of the season. Each time he drove in a go-ahead run, serving a critical role in the Warrenton Post 122 Freshman’s 5-3 win over Wentzville. It helped Coach Brian Vogt’s team to a fourth straight win, lifting Warrenton to 8-12 heading into the Ninth District Tournament.“Ben’s hits were huge at those points of the game,” asserted Vogt. Both teams generated a pair of hits early in the game, but neither was able to engineer a run until the fourth.Alex Vogt singled, while Allen Shepard and Brendan Cotner reached base on walks. The opportunity presented itself to Inman, and he cranked an RBI single to right field, scoring Vogt.A double and a single would help Wentzville notch the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning.Bats were quiet in the fifth, so Vogt addressed his team and got the results he desired in the sixth.“Our guys were kind of relaxed,” said Vogt. “They came back and responded well.”Eleven batters would step to the plate for Post 122 in the sixth inning.“We started hitting well and played good defense to finish the game,” said Vogt.Warrenton loaded the bases with two outs, and once again Inman was in position. He drove home Chris Garrett, putting Post 122 back in control 2-1.Cotner and Inman would then score on singles by Dalton Owenby and Brendan Hazel.“Owenby’s bat is on fire right now, so we wanted to give him an at-bat,” explained Vogt, who noted he was trying to rest his double-rosterd players as much as possible. Owenby finished with two hits and an RBI.Brendan Schanuel advanced home on a throw, ending the sixth inning with Warrenton in control 5-1.“We put pressure on them and took advantage of their mistakes again,” said Vogt.Wentzville came through with a productive inning of its own in the seventh. Eleven batters would cycle through despite just two hits, but Post 122 was able to contain the rally, limiting its opponent to two runs.Alex Vogt had two hits and scored one run, with Inman adding his two hits and two RBIs.Coach Vogt used an abundance of pitchers, starting with Owenby, who struck out two through two innings. He gave way to James Dotson, who whiffed four batters and walked one.Jordan Merrell then pitched, followed by Braden Lawson. Chris Garrett and Alex Vogt closed.Warrenton gave up eight total hits.INMAN STEPS UPDerrick Forsythe photo.
