An investigation continues into a two-car fatal accident that involved a Warrenton police officer. Donald L. Wood, 59, of Warrenton, was killed when he turned into the path of a Warrenton police car driven by Officer Kyle A. Smith, at the intersection of Highway 47 and Ash Road Sunday, March 14. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported Wood had been stopped in the northbound lane and was turning onto Ash Road at 12:13 p.m. At the same time, Smith was driving northbound in the southbound lane passing a line of stopped traffic in the northbound lane. The patrol car collided with Wood's 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. The patrol said Smith had his warning lights and sirens activated. Smith sustained only minor injuries and was released from the hospital later Sunday. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, Warrenton Police Chief Greg Houdyshell said. Smith has been with the department for three years. Houdyshell said Smith was one of two officers responding to the aid of a third officer who had radioed for assistance after having trouble arresting a subject. A nearby Warren County sheriff's deputy also responded to the call, Houdyshell said. Both the highway patrol and Houdyshell said Smith's speed is unknown at this time. Houdyshell said video cameras were in Smith's police cruiser and have been turned over to the highway patrol. The patrol's investigation is expected to be completed within one to two weeks, Cpl. Jeff Wilson said. Both cars were totaled in the collision and came to a rest on the west side off the roadway. Wood was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:55 p.m. by coroner Roger Mauzy. The wreck caused Highway 47 to be closed for a couple of hours as the patrol's reconstruction team investigated the scene. Houdyshell extended condolences to Wood's family. "This is definitely an unfortunate event," Houdyshell said. "It's tragic for everyone involved." Warrenton resident Liz Mischlispy was in the vehicle directly behind Wood's. She said the emergency siren wasn't audible until just before impact. "He (the cop) came out of nowhere," Mischlispy said. "It happened so fast." Multiple witnesses and nearby residents questioned if the sirens had been activated on Smith's car and whether he had been traveling too fast on the two-lane roadway. "The crash happened at exactly the same time the lights went on," said a nearby resident who declined to give his name. Renee Chilcutt, who lives in the nearby Andorra Estates subdivision, said she was inside her home and heard police sirens prior to the vehicles colliding. "I just heard a big crash," she said. "I knew somebody had hit somebody on (Highway) 47." Wood was within a couple of miles of his home in the Ashland Meadows subdivision and was returning from Sunday church services at Warrenton Baptist Church. Wood's daughter, Angela Richardson, said she will remember her father as "very caring" and good hearted." "He was always helping out," she said. "Anyway he could help, he would." Wood was retired from General Motors and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; five children and stepchildren; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Warrenton. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials are requested to be made to Warrenton Baptist Church.
