Police Arrest Bank Robbery Suspect

A man suspected of stealing approximately $25,000 in an armed robbery at American Bank in Warrenton has been arrested. Jerry B. Chambers, 32, of St. Louis, was arrested Friday morning without incident at a residence in the St. Louis area. A tip from someone who knew Chambers led to his arrest, according to the FBI. Warrenton detectives assisted officers from the FBI and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department with Chambers’ arrest at around 6:30 a.m., Warrenton Police Chief Greg Houdyshell said. Local charges are pending, according to Houdyshell, who was pleased to see a suspect identified and in custody. “This is a tribute to the cooperation of the FBI and our department working together,” Houdyshell said. “We are very pleased that the guy who is responsible is in custody.” Police said a black male believed to be Chambers entered the Warrenton bank, located at 917 N.E. Service Road, May 21 at 11:59 a.m. — just before closing time. He approached one of the tellers requesting a money order, displayed a two-tone handgun and demanded access to the safe. The suspect then tied both employees with zip-ties, entered the safe and placed the cash in a trash bag. No one was injured in the robbery. The money has yet to be recovered, Houdyshell said. Chambers is suspected of being involved in a series of bank robberies from March through May, according to the FBI. Along with robbing the Warrenton bank, he is suspected of robbing a UMB facility in Town and Country on May 7. He has been linked to other bank robberies with Walter W. Wallace, 23, of St. Louis. Both have been charged with robbing Pulaski Bank in St. Louis on March 29 and are suspects in holdups at Advance American Cash Advance in Granite City, Ill., on April 30 and FCB in Caseyville, Ill., on March 1, the FBI said. Wallace was arrested by the FBI on May 2. Melissa Springmeyer, American Bank executive vice president/chief operations officer, was glad to learn a suspect was in custody. “It’s great that it happened so quick,” she said. “It makes the employees feel better. We are thrilled the guy has been caught.” This is the second time in recent years that an American Bank had been robbed. The branch at Middletown, in Montgomery County, was robbed Dec. 31, 2009. The suspect in that case was arrested, convicted and sentenced. The bank has other branches in Wright City, Wellsville and Montgomery City.
