The Warrenton softball team hopes for a postseason run ended early in a 7-1 loss to Warrensburg in the semifinals of the Class 4, District 4 Tournament last Thursday.
The second-seeded Warriors were hoping to utilize home field to their advantage. Instead, it was Warrensburg who kept Warrenton’s bats silent and received help from four errors.
The defeat ended the Warriors’ campaign with a 17-6 record. Warrenton opened the district tourney the day before with a 14-4 win over No. 7 Marshall.
In the loss to Warrensburg, the Warriors were held to three hits, all singles. They managed to score their lone run on a RBI hit from Avery Tucker, which scored Kaylin Reynolds.
Junior pitcher Kathryn McChristy was charged with the loss. She tossed all seven inning as only one of the seven runs she gave up was earned. She allowed four hits, while striking out 10 and walking two.
In the Marshall game last Wednesday, McChristy was dominant with 11 strikeouts in four innings of work. She gave up only one run on two hits. Kylie Witthaus pitched the final two innings.
At the plate, Warrenton pounded out 17 hits, with nine players having at least one hit and six players having multiple hits.
Mackenzie Hurst and Michele Higby each went 3 for 3, while Hailey Roberts, Kennady Estes, Kaylin Haas and McChristy had two hits apiece. Hurst had a team-high five RBIs, while Reynolds knocked in two runs. Witthaus, Roberts, Hurst, Higby and Estes each scored twice.
Warrenton was well represented on the all-district team. Five players — McChristy, Tucker, Roberts, Estes and Higby — were selected to the first team, while the trio of Haas, Hurst and Reynolds were named to the second team.
Fort Zumwalt South, the top seed, captured the district title with a 3-1 victory over Warrensburg Saturday. The Bulldogs will play Rockwood Summit in Thursday’s sectional round.
