Certified lifeguard Nathanial Kutsch does the brick test in the outdoor pool at the Warrenton Aquatic Center. The brick test begins when a 5-pound brick is thrown in the water, requiring the lifeguard to swim to the bottom of the pool and retrieve it. The test is designed to show that the lifeguard can get to the bottom of the pool and resurface without using their arms.

He says he likes doing the test, but all lifeguard candidates must successfully complete the brick test twice in the outdoor pool before they'll be allowed to serve as a lifeguard outside.
