Personal achievements highlight Warrenton’s conference run

The Warrenton cross country teams had a nice day on their home course Saturday.

Hosting the GAC Conference meet, Warrenton had some nice finishes among GAC North runners.

On the girls’ side, senior Alexis Ruff placed third among GAC North runners, earning first-team all-conference as she completed the course in 20 minutes, 53.46 seconds, much to the delight of coach Jeremy Collins.

“That was the best time of her three years of running cross country,” Collins said. “She is in a good position when we go to districts in two weeks.”

A trio of Warriors’ runners also had top finishes as freshman Ryli Price (22:52) for 10th place, senior Sophie Bennett (23:07) for 11th place and freshman Reese Keith (23:08) for 12th place, all posted either season bests or PRs.

“All three earned second-team All-Conference,” Collins said. “Going into the race, our goal was to get all three in the top 14 to earn all-conference honors, and it was going to be tough, but they went out there and ran a fantastic run.”

On the boys’ side, sophomore Landon Neace (17:59.45) ran fourth among GAC North runners to earn first-team all-conference.

“Since he has not raced in a month and has very limited training, for him to compete as he did was amazing,” Collins said. “That will definitely put him right in the conversation for qualifying for state in a couple of weeks.”

After Neace, senior Ken Le (19:24) placed 14th with a personal-best time and earned second-team all-conference.

“That was the first time Ken has gone under 20 minutes, so that was great to see,” Collins said.

Collins added that the team’s youngsters ran very well.

“Freshman Thomas Schoonover, Ryker Kock and Alejandro Saldana placed 18th, 20th and 23rd all with season best times,” Collins said. “To see these three freshmen compete as they did was great. The goal is to get all three under the 20-minute mark, which would be nice going into next season.”

The team will wrap up the regular season Friday at the Clayton Invitational at St. Vincent Park before preparing for the district race in Hannibal in two weeks.
