With the 2010 Warren County Fair starting on the Fourth of July, it is only fitting that this year's theme is tied to a patriotic message. Last month, the Fair Board designated "Salute to America" as the slogan for the annual event that kicks off Sunday, July 4, and concludes Saturday, July 10, at the Warren County Fairgrounds. All military personnel will receive a free meal ticket on opening day if they show proper identification, Fair Board President Roger Owenby said. He also said organizers are trying to arrange a military flyover prior to the queen contest beginning that first night. More events throughout the week might be tied to the patriotic theme as well. "What a better way than to go back to our roots and bring everyone together," Owenby said. "We wanted to salute America. It's our way of saying thank you." One noticeable difference for this year's event is the elimination of the featured musical entertainment on the main stage. The Fair has struggled to draw a big enough crowd to offset the expenses of hiring well-known bands. Because of that Owenby said the Fair Board decided to go in another direction. In recent years, the Fair has featured acts such as Joe Nichols (2006), Aaron Tippin (2007), John Anderson (2008) and the Kentucky Headhunters (2009). Musical entertainment will still be available at the beer garden nightly. "The fact is we never drew the people," Owenby said. "The community has told us they want to see motorsports." New to the schedule includes a thrill show featuring newer model vehicles performing daredevil stunts on Wednesday night and a performance from monster trucks Big Foot and Bear Foot on Friday night. The Fair will kick off with the annual parade on July 4, as Owenby expects the starting time to be moved up earlier. That evening's entertainment will feature the queen pageant and a fireworks show. Other main attractions include motocross on Tuesday, the demolition derby on Thursday and a truck and tractor pull on Saturday. The rodeo also will be moved to Tuesday and Wednesday nights this year. Owenby said organizers are working on finalizing contracts for various events. He noted the Fair Board's progress is already much further ahead at this point compared to a year ago. "This year we are working hard to stay on schedule," he said. "We pretty much have everything lined up and ready to go." In an effort to keep costs down for fairgoers, Owenby said the one-price admission fee will continue for a second straight year. The fee eliminates the need to purchase wristbands for the carnival rides. Like in past years, there will also be no admission fee on the Fair's first day. "We're trying to keep costs down," Owenby said. "We keep plugging away. I'm excited about the Fair this year."
