By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
Following a standout career as a multi purpose threat on the prep diamond, Nicole Parish has decided to take her talent to the next level. The senior recently signed a letter of intent to play softball for Central Methodist University in Fayette.Parish chose CMU over UMSL, after receiving some direction from her summer select coach, Mitch Thomas.“I went for a visit there, and it was perfect,” said Parish. “The campus wasn’t too big or small, and it was in a great town. It’s not too far from home, but it gives me my independence.”Parish, who played a variety of positions for the Warriors, expects to play middle infield for the Eagles.“I would consider myself a good team player,” said Parish. “I look forward toimproving my skills personally.”In high school, she served about every role imaginable. Most recently she played catcher and third base but also served time at second base and shortstop.“Nicole is able to do a lot of things,” said Coach Trevor Hibbs. “She hits the ball well and is smart. She loves softball and passion will take you a long way.”Parish played four years on the varsity level and was a part of some of the most successful teams in program history.“My freshman year it was really cool being the only freshman on varsity,” said Parish. “That was whenever our record started to improve.”As a senior, Parish batted .377 with 23 hits and was responsible for 15 RBIs.During her junior season she batted .254 with 17 hits. But her hitting isn’t necessarily her strength.“I think I’m better at fielding than anything,” said Parish. “I love fielding and working on my eye-hand coordination.”Parish will be joining an Eagles team that is currently 8-9-1 in the midst of its spring season. CMU is a member of the Heart of America Athletic Conference and NAIA.“I met the softball team, and I loved them,” said Parish. “They seemed like a lot of fun. The coaches were great.”Parish plans to pursue a degree in nursing.Hibbs has witnessed several of his players move on to the next level and says it’s a positive sign for the Warriors.“It’s awesome, because you wish all the girls could go and play on,” said Hibbs. “It shows you we have quality athletes, and that’s how we’ve been able to win.”
