Much is yet to be determined about the Warrenton cross country team, as the Warriors return just one state qualifier in sophomore Madelyn Marschel.
“She broke through at districts last year and brings that experience despite being an underclassmen,” said Coach Jeremy Collins.
He anticipates the Warriors’ top senior runner will be Emma Lewis.
“She’s recorded times before, so hopefully she’ll be able to have some strong finishes this year,” said Collins.
Lewis will be joined by seniors Gabby Scruggs and Audrey Shaw.
“It’s always nice to have a good group of seniors who will take charge and help control practice,” said Collins.
The Warriors have also added freshman Camryn Petersmeyer.
“She and Madi will help each other out during practice,” said Collins. “It’ll be neat to see how well they can help each other compete.”
With the boys’ lone state qualifier no longer with the program, the position for No. 1 runner is open for the taking.
The Warriors will look to Gus Klaustermeier for experience.
“He’s kind of a silent leader who will work hard and lead by example,” said Collins. “He’s a good one to have on the team.”
Collins anticipates Warrenton’s top runner to be freshman Wyatt Claiborne.
“He could develop into a really good runner, so I’m excited to see how he does,” said Collins. Right now he’s putting in the work. We’ve just had a week of practice, but he’s starting to push himself and go a little further than other runners.”
The Warriors have only five on the boys team, so everyone should have an opportunity to compete on the varsity level.
Other runners include junior Thomas Hill, and sophomores Mark Diller and Coalton Hill.
Wright City Cross Country
The Wright City cross country team will anchor itself around the proven ability of junior Trent Bruning, who qualified for his first trip to the MSHSAA Championships last season.
“He took that last spot to reach state last year,” said Coach Billy Garrett. “So we’re hopeful he can get back and improve upon his performance there. He reached his goal of getting under 18 minutes last year, so he’s hoping to get that time down a little more this season.”
Bruning leads a relatively young crew that includes just one senior, Cairou Muller-Williams, and fellow junior Jackson Mazella.
The Wildcats also welcome newcomer Aiden Brummet.
The girls team returns minimal experience, led by junior Zoe Riggs.
“She is going to be pretty good and has a chance to be all-state,” said Garrett.
Sam Finch is expected to be a contributor, along with Charleigh Ferrell.
The Wildcats also have five new freshman joining the team this season.
“That’s a lot more than we’ve had in the past, so that’s good for our future,” said Garrett.
Both Warrenton and Wright City may have their schedules altered by COVID-19, with schools in St. Louis County not competing against outside schools. Cross country meets will also appear different, with staggered starts that rank runners on time rather than the order they cross the finish line.
