The Warrenton boys soccer team is hoping a dramatic conference win can propel it to more success down the stretch.
After starting the year 0-7, the Warriors beat St. Clair, 2-1, Sept. 6 at home.
The next day, junior midfielder Isaac Frederick scored on a corner kick in overtime to beat Winfield, 4-3.
“At this point, there is nothing that Isaac would do that would surprise me. He is such a great talent with an exceptional soccer I.Q. that helps everyone on the field,” Warrenton Head Coach John Schulte said. “He has played some outstanding soccer this year and even coaches from bigger schools like Fort Zumwalt East and Francis Howell have commented on how he was the best player on the field. He is always working on striking the ball and having it curve or slice away from the goal, and so when he put the corner kick in it was not a surprise.”
Frederick leads the Warriors with seven goals this season, while senior forward Nick Forrest has two.
The team has struggled to find consistent offense outside that duo, however.
“Every year has its challenges, and this year is no different. We have some young or inexperienced players who are starting for us and it takes time for them to understand all the details, like the defensive and offensive scheme,” Schulte said. “We started out playing some bigger schools with lots of talent and that has helped us get stronger as a team and understand the kind of hustle and intensity you have to have to play in high school.”
Last week Frederick scored another game-winner, putting a ball in the back of the net in overtime to beat St. Charles 1-0.
And Wednesday, a 2-1 win over Sullivan extended the winning streak to four.
Frederick again led the way with a pair of goals.
Jamie Acosta and Christian Trujillo finished with one assist each for Warrenton, and Garrett Sommer made a game-high five saves.
Landon Hoffman scored Sullivan’s lone goal.
O’Fallon Christian 10, Warrenton 0: The Warriors ran into one of the best programs in the area the following day, and O’Fallon Christian improved its record to 10-3 on the season.
Warrenton returns to action Tuesday at St. Charles West.
Schulte hopes the early-season challenges will help his team as it prepares for the postseason.
“The season is going OK,” he said. “After graduating several kids it has been an adjustment for the team, but we are starting to play better. We are moving the ball around the field and getting more opportunities to score, and the younger kids are starting to step up and play with more confidence, which is helping us to control the game.”
