Obama won’t go away

By his actions and words earlier, it appeared that Barack Obama, after his presidential term ended, would go home to Chicago. However, that has changed. He is leasing a mansion in Washington, D.C., where he plans to live — at least part of the time.He is saying now he will stay in Washington, D.C., so a daughter can finish high school there. It also will enable him to more closely reign as head of the Democratic Party and to lobby Congress for stalled programs he advocated.Writing in The Wall Street Journal, Richard Benedetto said the real reason for his plans to stay in Washington, D.C., probably is to fight for the preservation of his legacy.“And there is no more effective way of doing so than to remain on the battlefield and position himself not only as the de facto head of the Democratic Party, but also the main media voice of opposition to the policies of Mr. Trump.”By staying in Washington, D.C., Obama will be available to comment and criticize actions by President-elect Trump. That is unusual. Most former presidents are seldom heard from, especially in the first couple of years after leaving the White House. An exception was Bill Clinton. Since wife Hillary was in politics, serving in the Senate and as secretary of state, the Clintons always had one or both feet in the nation’s Capitol.Obama still is popular in his party, but it is doubtful if he will be successful on all fronts as far as major issues and legislation are concerned in the future. Why does he need an eight-bedroom gray stone mansion about two miles from the White House? We do wonder whether Obama will be a Bill Clinton type in growing richer by giving speeches. We also can’t help but wonder if we ever again will have a president like Harry Truman, who made it known that as a former president, he “was not for sale.”
