Now healthy, Warrenton girls hope to be ready to roll

Looking at the Warrenton girls' basketball roster, if someone were to pick a name from that group, there would, more likely than not, be an injury associated with that player this season.

As the campaign enters its final full month, though, sophomore guard Ava Schneider, who was out for a bit with a knee injury, would attest that the Warriors are getting back to full strength and are hoping to play their best basketball as a now-complete unit.

“It’s encouraging to have everyone back,” Schneider said. “I know that if I get down on myself, there is the bench and the team that will have my back. There’s someone there who can (step in, if needed).”

That deep bench paid dividends in the team’s most recent game as seven players earned their way onto the scoresheet in Warrenton’s 74-64 win over Summit on January 30.

That 74 points, the most put up by a Warriors team in two seasons, is something head coach Hannah Logan said has been a long time coming.

Sure, it’s February, but when the entire team hasn’t been together for most of the season, it’ll take some time to come together.

“Our offense is now starting to click,” Logan said. “I think we’re realizing that, if we take our time and let things play out, we’ll have more success.

“It feels nice to have everybody back,” added Logan. “For a few games there, we were like ‘who do we have and how many?’ For a while there, it was eight, then nine, 10 and then it was back down to nine. To know what everyone is back healthy and to know that I can put anyone in (is important).”

One unintended benefit of the Warrenton walking wounded has been the incorporation of some players who might otherwise not have had the chance to see the court as much as they have in recent days.

They’ve been thrust into the thick of the season and the team, as a whole, is both better and deeper for it.

Schneider (2.5 points per game), freshman forward Emma Flake (1.4 PPG) and freshman guard Jaydn Cox (1.2 PPG) have all provided important minutes for the Warriors (6-10).

Junior guard Sophia Benke said that having such valuable reinforcements emerge will be important down the stretch this season and, hopefully, in the future.

“Now that we have all the girls back, it feels like we’re a team again,” Benke said. “We’re back together now, it’s really great. Now, we want to work hard to see what we can accomplish.”

Being of the same mind, Logan said that she’s ready to see the team roll.

The Warriors host Visitation on Feb. 12 and Orchard Farm the next night, on court warming, and have just two regular-season games after that.

“I really want to take this (health and success) and carry it on through conference and into the postseason,” Logan said. “I love that we have been very spread out in our scoring. It makes us a lot more difficult to guard and that whole team effort in scoring can (only make us better).”
