Record Managing EditorThe conditions at Saturday’s Class 3, District 4 Meet were not going to slow Nathan Nordwald.Despite the rain and a wet course, the Warrenton freshman finished 11th individually in 17 minutes, 48.36 seconds and qualified for state.Nordwald was the lone state qualifier for the Warriors, who had two other runners place in the top 21. Only the top 15 qualify for the state meet, which will be held this Saturday, Nov. 7, at Oak Hills Golf Center in Jefferson City. The Class 3 boys race is scheduled to start at 11:25 a.m.Nordwald was thrilled to qualify in his first postseason race.“It definitely was a little intimidating running against all the big seniors and the older more experienced runners, but you have to run through it.”Nordwald slipped a bit in the race’s final 20 meters, but it didn’t affect his finish.“I made sure the person behind didn’t beat me,” he said.First-year Head Coach Jeremy Collins was proud of his young runner’s performance.“Nathan ran a great race,” he said. “Throughout the race he positioned himself in the top 15 and he really pushed the last 600 meters.”Sophomore Dylan Chandler just missed out qualifying by nine seconds. He placed 16th in 18:02.21.Senior James Goetz followed in 21st in 18:21.98. Others running for the Warriors were sophomore Matthew Hackmann (44th, 19:41.67), junior Ben Hoelscher (49th, 20:14.72) and sophomore Ryan Spoede (65th, 21:48.41).Sophomore Randy McRoberts also ran in the race, but exited midway with a leg injury.“All the guys have worked hard all season and for Dylan to miss qualifying for state by one place is tough,” Collins said. “Dylan was right there where he needed to be and ran great, but just came up a little short.”As a team, Warrenton placed seventh out of 11 teams with 136 points. Hannibal won the team crown with 59 points and St. Charles followed with 71 to also advance to state.Rounding out the top five were Fulton (84), Mexico (107), Liberty (117) and Orchard Farm (136).Malik Holman, a senior from Mexico, was the top individual. He ran the race in 16:58.84. Hannibal sophomore Aden Nicholas was second in 17:06.29.Warrenton will return six of its top seven runners next year.“It was a great season for them, unfortunately, there were a couple of injuries that we had to deal with,” Collins said. “I think they would have battled for a team-qualifying spot for state if we were able to stay healthy. Overall, this is a tough group and next year looks like they are going to be pretty tough.”
