College officials rightly are concerned about legislation that would allow some form of the carrying of guns on campuses. They should be alarmed about asinine legislation of this nature.Joining in the concern by college officials is President Dr. Jon Bauer of East Central College. He says he hasn’t seen any information that a proposal such as this improves security. We haven’t either. He’s right. There’s no need for idiotic legislation such as this.We hope Missouri lawmakers will reject any type of proposals to allow students and faculty members to be armed on college campuses. We do agree that security needs to be looked at on all college campuses, and to do all that can be done to improve it. Dr. Bauer said East Central has done that, but more efforts will be made to improve what is in place. There is a reporting plan in place for all colleges to report any crimes that have taken place, including hate crimes. Reporting of any threats is important. We realize that mentally disturbed students, or other people who may have access to the campuses, can be a threat to do harm. But that situation exists everywhere today. Everybody is concerned about security today. To allow gun-armed students, or any other people who have access to the campus to carry guns, is inviting trouble. Having trained and armed security personnel on campuses is the best approach. Trash any legislative proposal that would allow gun carrying on campuses!
