The Tribute to Veterans Memorial has been offered a new location in Warrenton along West Veterans Memorial Parkway and the Purple Heart Trail (Interstate-70).The property, on the west side of Denny’s, offers opportunity for growth and ceremonies. There also is space for parking and handicap accessible walkways.Groups would be able to host holiday ceremonies, educational services and other activities honoring veterans.Negotiations are being initiated to establish the legal documents allowing the Tribute to Veterans Memorial Committee to take ownership of the property. With 2017 being the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1, the city, county and the committee hope to begin ground preparations this spring. The Tribute to Veterans Memorial honors 31 soldiers from Warren County who lost their lives during World War I.The committee is working with Bart Berneking, architect, for the placement of the memorial on the new location. The overall design of the memorial has not changed. The memorial wall will be 6 feet tall, 1 foot deep and 18 feet long. It will be made of Missouri red granite with a black granite insert and 12-inch bronze lettering reading: “Some Gave All” on one side. The other side will have the 71 names of Warren County citizens who lost their lives in designated conflicts. Names will be listed by conflict and branch of service. The wall also will have additional space to honor future war veterans. The design uses the most modern LED lighting for accent and lower energy cost. Committee members said it will be a beacon for people traveling on the Purple Heart Trail. The six service flags will be displayed with the American and POW/MIA flag in the center. The statues of a woman and child standing in front of a Battlefield Cross (boots, rifle, helmet and blank dog tags) will be facing the monument wall.Pavers that are being sold will be laid to form a circular walkway around the service flags. The committee said much work has been completed and more is still to be done. For more information, visit http://tributetoveteransmemorial.org/ and check the city and county websites for updates.New Site
