For the third straight year, junior Nathan Nordwald led the Warrenton boys cross country at the Class 3 state meet in Jefferson City.
Nordwald finished 75th overall Saturday at Oak Hills Golf Course, completing the race in 17 minutes, 58.79 seconds.
He was joined by freshman Ben Sommer (85th, 18:06.27), senior Stephan Norwood (115th, 18:30.35) and sophomore Corbin Estes (153rd, 19:40.62).
“The race was a little physical at the beginning, and a couple of them got elbowed and pushed,” Warrenton Head Coach Jeremy Collins said. “Whenever you have the top runners in the state, you are always running with a group and it can be tough to find a good pace. But they went out and competed and ended the season on a high note.”
Nordwald, Sommer and Estes are expected to return next fall, which has Collins excited for the future.
“For Ben and Corbin, it was the first time running at the state meet, and I was proud of how they handled it,” Collins said. “Whenever you can gain this type of experience, it is going to be helpful.”
Overall, Collins said the 2017 team was the most successful boys team he’s had since joining the program in 2015.
“They placed second at our home meet, second at Elsberry, and were conference champions,” he said. “At conference we had two first-team all-conference runners with Ben and Nathan, and two second-team all-conference runners with Corbin and Stephan.”
Warrenton girls build for future
Like the boys team, the Warrenton girls are expected to bring the bulk of their roster back next fall.
“We didn’t have any seniors on the team, so it will be fun to see how much they can improve next year,” Collins said.
The girls were led by a number of underclassmen, which included freshman Emma Lewis and sophomores Lexi Frederick, Hannah Hoelscher, Karlie Patterson and Anahi Saldana.
Junior Naomi Rodriguez is expected to return as well.
“They worked extremely hard, and it was a fun group to work with,” Collins said. “It’s just great to see the hard work that the kids put in and as the season goes on, seeing the times improve.”
