Record Staff WriterWright City’s new early education facility will be named Wright Start Preschool. The Wright City R-II School Board voted 5-0 at its Feb. 19 meeting to approve the name recommended by the district’s Community Advisory Committee. The unanimous vote needed no discussion, only a quick and enthusiastic oral vote. Board members Corri Ruge and Heidi Neill were absent.“We liked the name better than the one we came up with, which was going to be the Wright City Preschool Center,” said school board President Alice Klem. The facility, under construction between the district office and SunRise United Methodist Church on Bell Road north of Interstate 70, is scheduled to be finished by the start of the 2015-16 school year in August.“It ought to be,” said Superintendent Dr. Chris Gaines. The new facility will be home to preschool, early childhood special education and Parents as Teachers programs. The preschool program is open to children ages 3 and 4.When the project was approved last year, Gaines said the cost of the facility would be approximately $900,000 with 80 percent of the costs recouped from the state. He estimated the annual operating costs at $90,000.Klem said completion of the facility by August was not critical because the district could continue to use current facilities at West Elementary School until the new building was ready. In other news• The board voted 5-0 to award projects to repair and refinish the gym floor and replace lower bleachers at the high school and to repave the parking lot at the middle school. The board accepted a $95,000 bid from Bolte Construction for the high school project. The board awarded a bid of $30,000 from PLM Industries for work at the middle school.• The board approved a change for the 2015-16 school year that will combine the positions of academic reassignment (out-of-school suspension) teacher and athletic director for the high school and middle school. The district is accepting applications for the position.Currently, assistant principals at the respective schools handle the athletic director duties. The board also voted to change the job description of the Spanish Club sponsor to Foreign Language Club sponsor.Klem and Gaines said administrators have been rewriting job descriptions in the past several months.“They were out of date and not very explicit about what was required of the position,” Klem explained.• April’s school board meeting was moved to 6 p.m. on April 16 due to a conflict with a track meet at the high school. Meetings are normally held on the third Thursday of each month.Orientation for new board members will be held at 6 p.m. April 13. David Mikus and Erin Williams are running unopposed for two open seats.Name approved for R-II preschool facility
