Murder trial moved to St. Charles County

The jury trial for Shawn M. Kavanagh, 28, the Bellflower man accused of killing three people and severely wounding a fourth in 2014, has been transferred to St. Charles County.Circuit Judge Ted C. House on March 20 ordered that the trial be transferred out of Warren County at the request of attorneys on both sides of the case, according to court documents. The trial will now take place at the 11th Circuit Court in the city of St. Charles.Jury selection will also take place in St. Charles County. Court documents indicated that the previous plan was to select jurors from Cape Girardeau County for the trial in Warren County.The Jan. 7, 2020, start date for Kavanagh’s trial remains unchanged. It was previously delayed from June 2019 at the request of attorneys from the Missouri Public Defender’s Office, who are representing Kavanagh. The trial is scheduled to last up to two weeks, from Jan. 7 to Jan. 22.Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Kavanagh. He is charged with nine felonies, including three counts of first-degree murder and four counts of armed criminal action, for the killing of Tara Lynn Fifer, 22, of Montgomery City, and Lexy Vandiver, 29, and her son, Mason Vandiver, 7, both of Jonesburg; and for severely wounding Jessica N. Powell, who had been married to Kavanagh. He also is charged with first-degree domestic assault and burglary.
