Liberty Christian senior post player Willy Mueller is one of the most positive people anyone is likely to meet.
So, within a matter of days, Mueller finished second in the Player of the Year voting for the Metro Athletic Conference before the Eagles finished second in the conference tournament, falling to Westwood Baptist by a 50-45 score on February 13, Mueller chose to see the positives.
“It's really great to know all your hard work pays off and it's all glory to God that I have the ability to play and just to really work hard for it,” Mueller said. “But getting second (at the tournament) is great, don't get me wrong, it would have been awesome if we did win, but it just shows how far we have come as a team from losing by 30 to that team two months ago to only losing by five and hanging with them the whole game.”
Mueller, who finished second in Player of the Year voting to Westwood’s Robbie Dodd, averages 18.4 points and 16.3 rebounds per game for Liberty (20-7), is one of three Eagles players to make the all-conference squad.
His work this season has meant a lot not only to the team but also to Coach Butch Clark. After all, Mueller not only surpassed 1,500 career points this season, but he also broke the school records for career rebounds and single-game rebounds.
“Willy is having one of the most dominant seasons in LCA history,” Clark said. “He’s been dang near unstoppable.”
Joining Mueller on the top team is junior guard Phoenix Obermann.
The junior guard, who recently broke the 1,000-point career barrier, is averaging team-highs in points (21.4 per game), steals (3.3) and assists (4.1).
“After being honorable mention last year, I worked really hard to make the first team,” Obermann said. “It feels great to do this, especially with Willy.”
While Obermann earned his share of accolades and accomplishments as a junior, Clark said that he only expects more from the guard.
“Phoenix has elevated his game into elite status,” Clark said. “He will only get better. Both of (these guys) making the first team is well-deserved.”
Rounding out the selections for the Eagles was senior forward Tommy Meyer.
Meyer averaged 13.9 points, 5.7 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots per game.
Clark said that, even more than the numbers, his play gave the team a psychological advantage over the competition.
“Tommy brought the dunk back to LCA,” Clark said. “He had a strong season and really deserved his selection.”
